Cracks appear to be forming in the federal Conservative caucus over a plan to harmonize Ontario’s sales tax with the federal G-S-T.
Bruce Grey Owen Sound MP Larry Miller says many people are concerned about having a single sales tax — calling it a giant tax grab.
Miller told a newspaper last week that the federal government did not “in any way” make the decision to merge the provincial sales tax with the federal G-S-T.
That puts him at odds with federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty — who has praised Ontario for agreeing to make the move and has openly encouraged other provinces to do the same.
Premier Dalton McGuinty notes Ottawa is providing 4.3 billion dollars to help the province adjust to a single sales tax.
