Safety concerns are the main reason Canada Post is making many rural homeowners move their mailboxes.
Canada Post is in the middle of checking nearly 1 million rural mailbox locations.
They check several items, including posted speed limits, the number lanes on the road, and do a volume count on the number of cars on the roadway.
The move to assess the mailboxes, has angered some homeowners in Grey and Bruce Counties.
Some say the new locations don’t make any sense to them.
Canada Post communications officer Mario Circelli says there are only 3 options — the mailbox location is okay, it needs to be moved, or there is no suitable location and the homeowner will have to get his/her mail elsewhere like a community mailbox.
Circelli claims Canada Post is not trying to reduce or eliminate rural mail delivery, and says 80 per cent of the rural mailbox deliveries are being maintained.
He says if homeowners are asked to move their mailbox, it’s because of safety concerns for the mail delivery person.
