A Hanover Councillor is missing the free plastic bags that used to be offered at the grocery stores.
Selwyn Hicks — a father of four, with two still in diapers — says like many families he relied on those plastic bags to serve as garbage bags in his home.
Without them, Hicks says he is now realizing how useful these plastic bags really were.
Now like many families with young children, he finds himself having to go out and purchase plastic bags to deal with dirty diapers and everyday family life.
Even so Hick says he supports the broader picture that we have to get plastic bags out of the landfill site.
But in the same breath Hicks says hes realizing there is a real cost to individuals like himself who relied on those plastic bags.
Councillor Peter Hambly says its going to take time for people to adjust to the change, the important thing is that we reduce the amount of plastic bags we use.
Not only do they blow around the landfill site making a terrible mess he says they can take 500 years to degrade.
All of Hanovers grocery stores now charge for plastic bags encouraging shoppers to bring or purchase their own reusable grocery bags.
Even the town of Hanover is also getting into the bag business and will be selling their own reusable grocery bags this Fall.
