The Owen Sound Van Dolders Home Team Woodsmen are once again Ontarios best.
The Woodies capped their sixth provincial championship in nine seasons on Friday night, downing the Norwood Nitro 13-5 at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre and completing a sweep of the Ontario Lacrosse Association Senior B playoffs.
Owen Sound was unbeaten in six postseason games, knocking off the Nitro in three straight after doing the same to the Brooklin Merchants.
The Woodies will advance to the Presidents Cup national championship tournament in Ohsweken; their first game is scheduled for Monday, August 24 at 2 p.m. against the Alberta representatives, the Okotoks Raiders.
Rob Milnes led the scoring parade on Friday, netting five goals and adding three assists.
It was a thrilling game for Milnes, who more than doubled his playoff goal output in one night. He had four tallies in four games prior to Friday and now has nine.
Bryan Kazarian, Matt Quinton and Wayne Burke scored two goals apiece for the Woodies while singles went to captain Jamie Grimoldby and Brandon McMillen.
Grimoldby, Burke and Mike MacLeod also added three assists each.
The outcome was never really in doubt, as the Woodies jumped out to a 4-0 lead less than seven minutes into the first period and held a 10-1 margin at the end of the second.
Even the second-period ejection of Owen Sounds starting goaltender Steve (Chugger) Dietrich for playing with illegal gloves did not help the visitors.
Josh McNaughton replaced Dietrich in net and held the Nitro scoreless for almost an entire full period of play – 19 minutes and 20 seconds elapsed before he allowed a goal.
Norwoods scorers were Chad Evans with two goals and Justin Kulla, Aaron Grayson and Mike McNamara with one apiece.
Owen Sound head coach Ian McGough says the Woodies played a strong game from start to finish, and hes very happy with their play as they set to defend their national championship later this month.
Grimoldby and alternate captains Jeff Goldie and Scott Luckhardt were presented with the Clare Levack Memorial Trophy by league commissioner Sharon McKeachnie of Owen Sound.
Its the third year in a row the Woodies have won the Levack Trophy.
The team also won it three consecutive times between 2001 and 2003; since the OLA revived Senior B lacrosse in 2000, no other team has won the Levack Trophy more than once.
This years triumph by the Woodies also breaks a tie with Owen Sounds former Senior B team, the North Stars, who won the Levack Trophy five times in 13 years between 1979 and 1991.
