Well owners in the Walkerton area are advised to have their water tested.
The Grey Bruce Health Unit is telling homeowners with private wells used for drinking water, to get those wells tested.
Water samples taken from a monitoring well in Brant township just outside Walkerton showed test results higher than normal for Nitrate in the ground water.
The provincial groundwater monitoring network says these nitrate concentrations are slightly above the acceptable levels identified in the “Ontario drinking water standards.”
The Monitoring wells are not used for drinking water, but for monitoring only.
Health Unit officials say the Provincial Monitoring network informs them when samples exceed the provincial standard.
It is up to the Health Unit to then inform well owners in the affected area.
Higher Nitrate levels can result in what is called “Blue baby syndrome” in infants under 6 months old.
Older children and adults drinking the water are not usually affected.
