Affordable housing and a women’s shelter will be going up in Wiarton.
Town of South Bruce Peninsula Council voted in favour of the construction of two housing units on the corner of Charles Street in Wiarton.
Miracle Place will be six affordable housing rental units.
Across the lot will be a second stag Women’s House of Grey Bruce with three rental units.
Owner of a six-plex apartment building in Wiarton, Nancy Steffler made a presentation at last night’s council meeting and declared she will be taking an appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board.
Steffler says the original public notice had several incorrect measurements on it and a missing lot allowance.
She says since they have amended the errors there should be another public meeting for residential input.
Steffler says the planning act states council has to give 20 days written notice before the zoning by-law can be passed.
Mayor Gwen Gilbert says Bruce County received 70 thousand dollars for each unit in federal and provincial funding.
Councillor Yvonne Harron says if the Steffler’s do submit an appeal there will be some major delays.
She says Wiarton really needs the housing and is disappointed to see it come to a halt.
Steffler also objects because she says it is too small of a space for both affordable housing and a woman’s shelter.
Steffler thinks council is rushing through the process and they could do a much better job with only one building on the lot.
