The Hanover Walkerton Landfill Committee has come up with a way to reduce waste and increase recycling efforts.
Green and black garbage bags may become a thing of the past for Hanover and Walkerton residents.
The Landfill Committee is proposing both Hanover and Walkerton adopt a clear bag policy.
It’s suggested that the municipalities proceed with the implementation of clear bags on a voluntary basis effective January 1st — with a mandatory implementation date set for July 1st, 2010.
However nothing has been set in stone — the clear bag proposal will go before Hanover and Brockton Councils for approval in September.
It’s hoped this will give the municipalities enough time to mull over the idea before making a final decision.
Hanover Councillor Peter Hambly is in favour of the clear bags.
He says it will reduce the amount of recyclables that end up in the landfill.
Hambly points to Goderich as an example in which the town experienced a 50 per cent reduction in waste following the implementation of clear bags.
Hambly says its just a matter of people getting used to the idea.
