The annual Eddie Sargent Memorial Across the Bay swim is set for this Sunday in Owen Sound.
The 13th annual event is taking place at 10 AM at the Gazebo behind the Bayshore Community Centre.
Final registration is from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM.
There are no registration fees – the event is not a fundraiser.
Swimmers can choose from 1 to 2 or 4 mile swims and must be accompanied by a safety boat.
Volunteer Jennifer Ames says this is not a typical swim as it is not competitive but focuses on challenging yourself against the elements.
Ames says it is very different than a pool race as there are no lines and the water is much cooler.
According to Ames the history of the swim dates back to 1955 when Eddie Sargent started the swim.
The swim stopped in 1958 but then was re-introduced by the Sargent family in 1996.
Ames says the participants range from 10 years old to 75 years old – some swim teams have also participated in the past.
Ames has hopes of seeing 50 swimmers in the water for the races.
There is still a need for boats to be used as safety boats and spare rowers for the boats.
There are also activities on land with raffles and draws and music.
Online registration can be completed at www.eddiesargentswim.org
