There may not be much support at Grey County Council for a temporary waiver of residential development charges.
Chatsworth Mayor Howard Greig introduced a motion last week that, if passed, would waive the charges for the remainder of 2009 — effective September 1st.
Greig says his motivation was the speculation that removing these charges might help to encourage new development, thereby boosting the local economy.
Greig found little support for his motion, and it was not voted on.
Blue Mountains Mayor Ellen Anderson feels development charges work.
Otherwise, she says taxpayers would have to foot the bill for servicing new development.
Council instead passed another motion that directed his idea to the County’s finance and personnel committee, which would then report back to council.
