Saugeen Shores has received some important federal funding for emergency services equipment.
The town is getting over 23 thousand dollars from the Joint Emergency Preparedness Program (JEPP).
It will pay for new auto extrication and radio equipment for the fire department.
The funding covers 45 per cent of the over 52 thousand dollar cost, which was part of the 2009 municipal budget.
Fire Chief Phil Eagleson says the manual extrication equipment at the Southampton station doesn’t do the job properly if a crash victim has to be removed from a vehicle.
He says today’s cars are actually built stronger and that means stronger equipment is needed.
The entire project was going to be funded from the annual budget — but Eagleson says the federal funding will go a long way.
