Another step in the process towards new affordable housing units in Port Elgin has passed.
Saugeen Shores Council will go forward with a by law to transfer land on Wellington Street to Bruce County Housing for 30 to 40 new units.
Mayor Mike Smith says the town and the county are both excited about the plan, but adds developments like this take time.
The county is finalizing a site plan for the project and an environmental assessment has taken place.
Contaminated soil is being removed from the former industrial land.
Smith says construction could begin late this year or early next year and that the county is still looking at various funding models and getting approvals.
He says they’re trying to move the project ahead as fast as they can at both the town and county level.
