The Chief of the Chippewas of Nawash says they have an experienced Council to grow the First Nation.
Ralph Akiwenzie was re-elected as Chief on the weekend by beating out three other candidates for the top job on band Council.
Akiwenzie will start his 10th two-year term as Chief next week.
He feels his experience of 26 years as both a Chief or Councillor was the main reason why he was re-elected.
9 other Councillors — including a couple of new faces — will be sworn in next week.
Akiwenzie hopes Council will be able to accomplish a lot in the next two years because of their experience.
The Chief says the most pressing issue is moving ahead with the construction of the new Cape Croker Elementary School.
Akiwenzie says they must also build more affordable housing and improve social programs.
Akiwenzie also wants to make improvements to the community centre and the First Nation infrastructure — including better roads.
Akiwenzie feels the Chippewas of Nawash are in better shape than some other First Nations in Ontario.
He points to the local fishery as well as attraction such as Cape Croker Indian Park that allows their economy to grow.
