You may be paying a bit more for a home in Collingwood.
Town council has approved its new development charge by-law which more than doubles the charge to 21 thousand dollars for a single family home.
The charge that developers have to pay so muncipal services like sewer and water can be put in on the site will usually be reflected in the price of the home.
Council has decided to phase in the new charge — which is up by 11 thousand dollars — over three years to make it easier on developers.
The town will still ask for the charges at the permit stage, after developers have collected money from the sale of the homes or condos.
Many developers expressed concerns at a public meeting that a proposed change to the process, making them pay before any units are sold, would cost developers too much money because they’d have to borrow it.
The new by-law kicks into effect in September to replace the current by-law which hadn’t been updated since 2004.
