The Drinking Water Source Protection Committee for Grey-Sauble, Saugeen, and Northern Bruce Peninsula are in the process of planning a policy.
It will guide communities on how drinking water is protected in this region.
Teresa McLellan is the Source Water Protection Liaison Officer with the Ministry of the Environment.
McLellan says a discussion paper is being examined to get dialogue going on local committees about long-term planning for source water protection.
She says the policies will affect land use planning around wellheads, water intakes, and other source water areas.
McLellan says one example of a threat to drinking water is leaking underground fuel storage tanks where traces are showing up in wells and intakes.
She says an assessment report is being developed that shows all of the potential threats to drinking water in the Grey-Sauble, Saugeen, and North Bruce Peninsula area, and then the final policy will be developed.
But, she says that won’t happen anytime soon.
McLellan expects that document to be submitted to the Ministry in 2012.
When the Grey-Sauble, Saugeen and North Bruce Peninsula Committee met on Friday in Point Clark, members went through a workshop designed to help with the planning process.
