An extensive herb garden is sprouting up alongside the Durham Town Hall.
West Grey Mayor Kevin Eccles says the garden was planted this year in support of the 29th Annual Durham Herb Fair.
Eccles says the garden consists of up to 50 different types of herbs, ranging from culinary to medicinal to aromatic varieties.
He says the garden is meant to be an educational tool, demonstrating what varieties can be grown successfully in our area.
Eccles says the herbs aren’t just up for grabs, but will be made available at the Herb Fair each year.
Eccles says the garden even includes some vegetables, like tomato plants, and a memorial pear tree.
The herb garden is also providing work for local teens – Eccles says they’ve hired a couple students to maintain the garden over the summer, under the guidance of the Parks Committee and the Horticultural Society.
