If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the photo that has given Tobermory top honours as one of Canada’s hidden travel gems contest is generating pages of praise.
The photo — which can be seen at the Canadian Tourism ‘Locals Know’ website — has been selected by tens of thousands of Canadians as the best picture in the contest.
At recent count more than 81 thousand people have clicked on the photo at www.localsknow.ca
Gisele Danis is with the Canadian Tourism Commission’s Canada program and says she can’t believe the excitement that one photo has generated all across the country and from other parts of the world
She says people can’t believe those crystal clear turquoise waters are near Tobermory and not at some exotic beach in the Caribbean.
Danis says that was the whole point of the Canada Program.
To seek out and promote unknown parts of the country the average tourist would never think of visiting and have Canadians tell other Canadians where to go to find these hidden treasurers.
Danis says Canada is facing a tourism deficit with more Canadians traveling out of the country rather than explore their own back yard and this program is trying to encourage more national tourism.
