An evacuation in Port Elgin is over and officials are no longer dealing with
what they called a major gas leak.
Saugeen Shores Police Chief Dan Rivett says crews were called out to the corner of Waterloo and Mill Streets just before 9 AM this morning.
That’s when he says a backhoe cut a gas line – while doing some work.
An evacuation of the immediate area was done right away – and union gas officials were called in.
Rivett says they were concerned about any source of ignition that could make matters worse.
Fire and Police crews remained on the scene the whole time too.
Rivett says about an hour later — just before 10 AM — the situation was under control.
He says residents were told they could return home after testing of gas levels in the area.
Rivett says union gas will be dealing with contractors and insurance about the issue now.
This is one of a few gas leaks in the Port Elgin area in the last year or so at a construction site.
There was one in September at the Wal-Mart Construction site last year and one in front of the Port Elgin Library on Goderich Street in July of 2008 as well.
