After a three week delay — demolition has finally begun on Hanover’s old coliseum.
There’s no exciting wrecking ball scenes at the Hanover Coliseum.
The demolition will be a gradual process as the 46 year old building is taken a part piece by piece.
Recreation Facilities Manager Dale Steinhoff says it will take about a month for the demolition process to be complete.
Thats because much of the coliseum will be recycled, thus limiting the amount of material that will end up in the landfill.
Councillor Bob White is very excited to see the project at this stage, saying its been years in the making.
Even so, White admits that the demolition of the building itself will be a bittersweet victory.
He says theres almost half a century of memories in that old building.
Steinhoff is not anticipating much disruption to the neighbouring residents.
There will however be some sporadic interruptions to the Aquatic Centres swim schedules as well as some reduced parking area for the Hanover Raceway.
Once demolition is complete work will get underway on Hanovers new 8.8 million dollar Regional Recreation Complex which is set to be complete by next summer.
It will feature an NHL sized hockey rink, an indoor walking track and an auditorium.
