Wheelchair residents in West Grey now have another option for transportation.
Council last night granted a 6-month taxi license to Saugeen Community Shuttle based out of Hanover.
Manager Jamie Duncan says the non-emergency disability taxi service will be offered in places like Hanover, Durham, Walkerton, and Mount Forest during off-peak hours like evenings and weekends.
He says his company will be operating during the “dead times” and will not go up against another wheelchair transportation company that already offers similar service during the day.
Duncan says there is a real need for this kind of service and would like to break into this market.
He says E-M-S service is often tied up because of non-emergency calls and would like to help ease some of the burden.
Duncan says there are parts of Wellington North that don’t have this kind of service and residents there have expressed concerns about it.
He says nursing homes in that area are very excited to learn that wheelchair transportation will be now be coming to Mount Forest.
Duncan says they are still working out the fee schedule but will try and keep them as affordable as possible.
The fleet includes a wheelchair van and an ambulance.
The Saugeen Community Shuttle will also be seeking a taxi licence to serve Wellington North.
