Plans to Celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Point Clark Lighthouse in August just got a major financial boost.
The Department of Canadian Heritage is giving a 20,300 dollar grant to the Friends of Point Clark Lighthouse for a weekend-long celebration on August 14, 15, and 16th.
Co-Chair Keith Kelly says the money will be used for entertainment at the celebration.
There will also be an art and photography contest, entries can be submitted at the Oil Shed building at the lighthouse.
Other weekend activities include a car show and community church service.
Huron-Kinloss Mayor Mitch Twolan thanks the federal government for the contribution and hopes it will help bring people to the celebrations.
Some repair work has been happening on the lighthouse, and safety precautions have been taken to protect people walking around the building.
Pieces of stone have been falling off due to moisture getting into the walls. A fence has been put up to keep visitors from getting too close to the base of the lighthouse and canopies have been installed outside buildings to keep people safe.
Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb says Parks Canada has taken some steps at making repairs already but the rest of the work will be finished in 2010.
The Point Clark Lighthouse is one of the six “Imperial” lighthouses on Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.
Others include Chantry Island, Griffith Island, and Cove Island.
