The Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association of Owen Sound is back on the water helping build the trout population.
Members have been building new trout spawning areas, repairing damaged ones and constructing trout covers on the upper Sydenham River.
Arnie Clark tells Bayshore Broadcasting News they have been absent from the waterways since 1971 but after requests from residents – are back at work.
Clark says it’s been awhile since they have done spawning work as they focused more on the building of two fish hatcheries.
The spawning operation is a huge undertaking with logs being anchored in the water and spawning gravel arriving by the truckloads.
Volunteers as well as amateur rangers are working on the project.
Most of the work will be completed early next week – and more will continue in September.
Clark says while the population is good – these spawning areas attract trout very quickly.
