Collingwood Council is supporting efforts to bring more affordable housing to town.
Council voted 7-2 on Monday to give the Affordable Housing Task Force 22 thousand dollars from reserves for a budget for the rest of this year.
Affordable Housing Co-ordinator Keith Hull says the money is needed to send members to conferences and on research trips.
Hull says the money will also help promote the need for affordable housing and to bring in experts to educate people interested in creating less expensive living options.
Hull tells us he is thrilled with council’s decision.
He says the task force is looking at a possible partnership with a private developer as well as creating more affordable apartments above some of the businesses downtown.
The Affordable Housing Task Force needed 27 thousand dollars for the whole year but lowered the request to 22 thousand since there’s only 6 months left of the year.
The Committee presented council with a business plan after it was asked to do so by council back at the beginning of June.
The Task Force has promised to update council on its progress.
