Hanover and Walkerton residents are being encouraged to compost.
Green Cones are now being sold at the Hanover Walkerton Landfill Site.
The solar powered food waste digester is being sold at cost to residents for 65 dollar unassembled or 70 dollars assembled.
The regular retail price is 185 dollars.
Hanover Councillor Peter Hambly says the organic composter can take everything from red meat and poultry to bones, fruits and vegetables as well as dairy products and cooked food scraps.
Over 90 per cent of the waste materials in the Green Cone will be absorbed as water by the soil.
It’s Hambly’s hope that many residents will take advantage of this opportunity.
He says the Green Cones are a great way of diverting kitchen garbage from the landfill site.
This is especially important given the fact that the Hanover Walkerton Landfill site only has a life expectancy of just a year or two left.
The Green Cone Digester reduces food waste to its natural components of water, carbon dioxide and a small amount of residue.
