The Town of Saugeen Shores is hoping for a boost in bucks to implement a new series of signs to guide visitors in the municipality.
An application is being made to the province’s Rural Economic Development–or RED program for over 230 thousand dollars.
If the town gets the funding, it will go towards a 579 thousand dollar program that would see new town gateway signage, directional signage, and event boards installed.
Other sources are funding are money set aside in the 2009, 2010, and 2011 budgets, and money from Bruce County.
Community Services Director Mike Myatt says it’ll be a minimum of two years to phase in the extensive program that involves five new signs for the various entrances to Port Elgin and Southampton.
Myatt says if they’re successful in getting the grant, council will decide this fall on the timing of introducing the new signs.
Deputy Mayor Doug Freiburger wants to be sure that all, or as much of the new material as possible is made locally, or at least within Ontario or Canada.
He wants to see dollars being spent stay in the municipality.
The source of the designs however is not local. Corbin Design, a Michigan-based firm has been responsible for that part of the project.
Myatt says they’ve settled on a design for a gateway sign for Port Elgin, but some details still have to be worked out for Southampton.
