A woman is in critical condition in hospital after a horse trailer was rear ended by another vehicle near Varney.
Grey County OPP report a silver late model VW Beatle was northbound on Highway 6 south of Varney when it hit a horse trailer drawn by a pickup truck around 6 PM last night.
Police say the trailer — with 2 race horses aboard — was stopped in a line of northbound traffic being controlled by a construction flag person.
Constable Steve Starr says the car rolled several times across the highway after the collision and came to rest in a ditch.
The female driver was pinned under the vehicle and Starr says a group of passing motorists lifted the vehicle off her before emergency personnel arrived.
Preliminary investigation has determined that alcohol, speed and non-use of seat
belts were contributing factors.
56 year old Yolanda Novak of Georgian Bluffs was taken to the Durham hospital and was then airlifted to London Health Sciences Centre in critical condition.
There were also 2 dogs in the car — but they are at a local vet clinic in good condition.
The driver of the truck — 68 year old Norm Jones of Campbellville — was not injured and the horses, although shook up, appear to be doing fine.
That portion of Highway 6 was closed for about 5 hours as OPP Technical Collision Investigators examined the scene for evidence.
Starr says they also learned the same VW Beatle had allegedly failed to remain at the scene of a collision moments earlier on a side road and West Grey Police are investigating.
Police would also like to hear from any witnesses who notice the silver VW Beatle on the road near Varney.
