More than 70 Minor Soccer teams will be in Owen Sound this weekend for the annual Scenic City Cup tournament.
The event is 99 percent filled according to tournament chair Glenn Wilson who believes capacity for the tournament is 74 teams, and they have 73 confirmed for Saturday and Sunday.
Wilson says the organizers have considered adding another evening to the annual tournament and starting it on Friday, but accommodation is so scarce at this time of the year in the region, they’ve elected to continue with the Saturday and Sunday format.
Wilson notes at least a half dozen teams will commute to Owen Sound from their lodging at Collingwood because places in Owen Sound are booked to the max.
The Scenic City Cup generates funds for Owen Sound’s rep teams who are responsible for creating and maintaining their own operating budgets.
However this year, proceeds will be directed to the design and construction of a new ” practice field ” at the Kiwanis Soccer Complex.
All of the fields at the Complex plus pitches at Victoria Park & at Kelso Beach Park will be used over the course of the weekend.
Wilson relates Owen Sound Minor Soccer has teams entered in virtually every division and some of those teams have a shot at winning the Scenic City Cup title on home field
