A new garbage pick-up system may be in store for the Town of South Bruce Peninsula.
A first and second reading of the waste management by law was carried at last night’s council meeting.
The by law, if passed will allow one free bag to be set out with a maximum of three bags.
The other two bags will require $1.50 bag tags.
The proposed by law will also include a maximum fine of five thousand dollars for waste left on the side of the road or other public property.
Councillor Dan Kerr says the by law is a very large recommendation and they have been looking at it for more than two years.
Kerr says their major concern is the fact that the landfill is filling up at an alarming rate.
He says 30 per cent of material which goes into the dump should be recycled.
Kerr says to expand the landfill site it would cost the town 5 million dollars and he is very concerned about having to do that.
Resident and employee of Sauble Beach Resort Camp, Jeff Wright says he disagrees with the entire by law.
Wright says they are going to invade people’s privacy by proving they might have recycling in their curbside bag.
He says council is trying to create higher costs to achieve a point of zero recycling in waste.
Wright says that would be a miracle if any community could get to zero per cent.
He also disagrees with the three bag limit per household because residents can create more waste some weeks than others.
Kerr says the towns recycling diversion rate is 21 per cent and they should be at 50 to 80 per cent.
Council will host a series of public meetings over the next couple of months to get feedback from residents on the waste management by law.
