Owen Sound City Council is revisiting an issue which has pedestrians yielding to traffic.
At last week’s meeting, Council voted to return the issue for the by-law committee to re-evaluate two mid-block pedestrian crosswalks downtown.
Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners says the committee will check to see if there has been any loosening of regulations in the traffic act.
When the Owen Sound big dig was done in 2004, Council was advised that in order for pedestrians to have the right of way – they would have to be signalize.
Lovell Stanners says it seemed at the time that would be way too many signals on the Main Street.
Councillor Deb Haswell brought the motion forward stating it is not right for pedestrians to have to yield to traffic in the downtown core.
Haswell says the crosswalks fly in the face of the Ministry of Transportation.
The two crosswalks are between 8th and 9th Streets and 9th and 10th Streets.
