A generous donation means some sprucing up for Owen Sound’s newest homeless initiative.
Union Gas has donated one thousand dollars to Safe n’ Sound to revamp their outdoor space.
Safe n’ Sound spokesperson Glenda Devlin says since opening in March, they’ve wanted a garden and patio where people can sit and relax.
Devlin says Union Gas also donated the manpower for the project – a dozen volunteers showed up in June to do the work.
They made a patio space using a wooden framework and gravel, built two benches, and added four large wooden planters.
Devlin says it used to be a bit of an eye-sore, but now it looks terrific and is a great space where people can enjoy a bit of nature.
She says they are also taking advantage of the opportunity to plant some vegetables that people will be able to use and take home.
Safe ‘n Sound Outreach Worker Teresa Pearson says more and more people are hearing about all the services and facilities they have available.
Pearson says in the entire month of April they had 56 visitors, while in the first two weeks of June they had 88.
Safe ‘n Sound offers lockers, computers, laundry facilities, showers, and a kitchen, while also linking people with other services available in the community.
Devlin says they will be at the Owen Sound Cycling Festival on July 11th and 12th operating a food booth to raise money.
