First Round 66 Propels Albin Choi to Early Lead at Investors Group Ontario Junior and Juvenile Boys Championship
CAMBRIDGE, ON Torontos Albin Choi fired a sizzling six-under par 66 to claim the lead at the Investors Group Ontario Junior and Juvenile Boys Championship at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge. First round action concluded Tuesday evening with the 17 year old leading the field of 155 of Ontarios best male junior golfers.
Chois eight birdies on the par 72, 7061-yard track pushed the Caledon Woods Golf Club member into the lead by four strokes. Choi, a member of the RCGA National Development Team, is coming off a win earlier this year at the CN Future Links Ontario Championship and is looking for his first title at this event.
Richmond Hills Jack Sedgewick, who represents Beacon Hall Golf Club, sits in second place after carding a first-round 70, two-under par.
Defending Ontario and Canadian Junior Boys Champion Mitch Sutton, 17, of London shares a four-way tie for third place with Spencer Berk, 18, also of London, Brandon Ng, 16, of Toronto, and Paul Doig, 14, of Seaforth after all four golfers delivered identical one-under par 71s.
Action continues Wednesday beginning at 7:30 am, with a cut taking place at the conclusion of tomorrows second round. The low 60 golfers and ties will continue on to play the final two rounds on Thursday and Friday, with the champion to be crowned on Friday afternoon.
The Investors Group Ontario Junior and Juvenile Boys Championship is open to male golfers eighteen years of age or less, and 2009 marks the 87th playing of the event. Past champions include 2009 NCAA Champion Matt Hill, and current PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour players Bryan DeCorso, Jon Mills, David Morland IV and Mike Weir.
