Who is John McDonald and why did his tombstone end up in a ditch in the Barrie area?
These and other questions need answers to satisfy Bruce County Museum archivist Ann-Marie Collins.
Collins says they do know John McDonald was a fisherman from Southampton who died April 6th, 1890 at the age of 46.
He was buried in the old cemetery near the banks of the Saugeen River but his grave marker has been missing for some time.
Collins says the Barrie and district hunters and anglers group were doing their annual cleanup where they always do, but this time they found a tombstone.
Collins says the marker was not there last year.
She suspects it was in someone’s barn because it appears to be in good shape.
Collins says an inscription on the bottom of the tombstone insinuates that he was married and with children but there are no records to confirm that.
She says they’re always looking for leads and more information from anyone that may be related in someway to this person.
