Brockton’s Environmental Advisory Committee is aiming to reduce garbage in the municipality by 75 percent.
The Committee made a presentation at Monday’s Council meeting where they outlined a number of initiatives to achieve their goals.
Committee Member Therese Estephan says the biggest initiative will be the communication and education program.
She says once they get that going people will accept the program more and once they have the knowledge it will make things easier.
Estephan says having public recycling bins will give the people the opportunity not to toss things in the garbage.
She says they are also aiming to have recycling programs in multi-residential units.
She says they can’t ignore any sector.
Estephan says they did a waste audit this past January and found out that more than half of the trash in garbage bags can be recycled.
She says the opportunity is there to divert waste from landfills and believes it is do-able.
