A Toronto resident — who spends his summers in Southampton — will be the first person in Ontario to carry the Olympic Torch when it makes it’s way across Canada on the way to next year’s winter games in Vancouver.
David Grant is a retired lawyer and World War Two Veteran with a long history of involvement with charitable organizations.
The 86 year old Grant says he got the idea to apply when he was watching a hockey game on TV and saw a commercial asking for people who wanted to carry the torch.
The contest is run by RBC.
Grant’s application focused on his love of Canada and his service to the country during the war in the air force, and in the community.
Grant says the Olympics always bring Canadians together, especially the hockey games when everyone watches in support of their country.
His love for Canada isn’t something he hides.
Grant calls “O Canada” a “patriotic love song.”
Grant tells Bayshore Broadcasting News his application included a pledge to make Canada a better country.
He says he outlined his past history and said he’s been carrying the torch his whole life.
Grant says he’s still waiting to find out what route he will be taking when he carries the torch for a mile in the Toronto area.
Grant says he’s looking forward to returning to Southampton this summer to enjoy the local hospitality.
