Lots of fireworks will be going off Canada Day and local fire prevention officials are warning people to pass up on the small backyard display and head off to your local municipal event.
Owen Sound Fire Prevention officer Greg Nicol says considering how much it costs to purchase fireworks, people get a much bigger bang for their buck by taking in their local Canada Day display.
He says however, if you are planning a small backyard fireworks display there are several safety tips people should be following.
Nicol says appoint a responsible adult to be in charge of discharging fireworks and carefully read and follow the label directions on fireworks packaging.
Discharge fireworks well away from combustible materials like buildings, trees and dry grass.
He says always keep a water hose or pail of water close by when discharging fireworks and keep sparklers away from children.
Nichol says sparklers burn extremely hot and can ignite clothing, cause blindness and result in severe burns.
He warns the sparkler wire remains hot for some minutes after burnout, it should be immediately soaked in water to avoid injury.
