Saugeen Shores’ first ever Relay for Life for the Canadian Cancer Society was a huge success.
Things wrapped up at 7 AM this morning.
Event Co-Chair Rona Cobean says 56 teams spent the night circling the track at Saugeen District Secondary School and the total amount of money they raised is 150 thousand dollars and counting.
She says that’s way beyond their early expectations.
They surpassed their goals of 50 teams and 100 thousand dollars.
Cobean says the luminary ceremony was especially moving with over 12 hundred of them lining the track.
She says a construction class at Saugeen District Secondary School built large signs spelling out the words “HOPE” and “CURE” that were lit by firefighters while bagpipes played.
Over 80 survivors took part in the survivors lap.
98 The Beach’s Natasha Drummond says Heather Gowanlock spoke about losing her husband to cancer and then finding out she herself had the disease.
Drummond says it was very emotional to see the survivors walk.
Cobean says based on the huge success of the first Relay for Life in Saugeen Shores, they are already thinking about having it again next year.
