Town staff in Saugeen Shores are clarifying recent figures about the level of unpaid property taxes in the municipality.
Auditors recently stated that 12.5 per cent of taxes were unpaid in 2008.
That is up from 11.5 per cent in 2007, and that the level is over 10 per cent is cause for concern.
However, based on a calculation formula used by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs that is based on the total taxes receivable as a percentage of the total taxes levied, including county and education taxes — the rate for Saugeen Shores in 2008 was five percent, only slightly up from 4.8 percent in 2007.
Treasurer Lori Sweiger says staff continue to monitor the amount of tax arrears and will ensure effective collection practices continue to be used.
