Lasalle Longshot Nathan Komsa Captures Ontario Mens Mid-Amateur Title
Bath, ON 25 year old Nathan Komsa of Lasalle, Ontario came from behind to beat defending Canadian Mid-Amateur champion Dave Bunker by two strokes at the Investors Group Ontario Mens Mid-Amateur Championship. The event, conducted by the Golf Association of Ontario, saw the duo battle it out in a nail-biter of a final round at Loyalist Country Club.
Komsa entered Thursdays final round in a tie for third place at even-par, trailing second-round leader Bunker by four strokes. The Essex Golf & Country Club member turned it on right from the first tee, birdying the first hole and inching his way closer to Bunker through the turn. Komsa managed to take the lead over the 2008 Ontario Amateur Champion on the 13th, but Bunkers tidy chip for birdie on the 16th evened the scores heading to the final stretch.
I knew I would be able to go low on the back nine, said Komsa. Coming within a stroke and then tying up the scores felt great.
On the par-5, 511-yard 18th, Bunker struggled with a drive into the fescue while Komsa found himself on the green in two strokes. With a barely missed 30-foot putt for eagle, Komsa closed out his round with a three-under par 67, two strokes ahead of Bunker and just short of the low amateur competitive course record (66), set by Bunker on Wednesday.
I was definitely nervous when we teed off, said Komsa. Dave is just a phenomenal golfer and I know the quality of golf that he plays. Things just seemed to work out in my favour today.
Komsas biggest win to date was a victory at the 2004 NCAA Division 1 Horizon League Championship, but his Ontario Mid-Amateur title marks his first major victory on the Canadian side of the border. 2009 was his first year of eligibility for this event and surprisingly, Komsa had only played one round of golf since qualifying for the Mid-Amateur on April 28th.
Bunker captures the Ontario Mid-Master (age 40 and over) trophy and the overall silver medal with his three day total score of 213 (-3). Third place went to Hamilton Golf and Country Clubs Tyler McDannold who delivered a total of 217 (+1).
Komsa, Bunker, McDannold and Waterloos Rob Cowan will represent the province as Team Ontario at the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship taking place August 18th-21st at Cooke Municipal Golf Course in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. The winner of that event will receive an exemption into the 2010 Canadian Open.
2009 marks the 17th playing of the Investors Group Ontario Mens Mid-Amateur Championship, an event that showcases Ontarios best male amateur golfers over the age of 25.
