The re-design of the widened and moved Highway 26 will include paths for deer and roundabouts for cars.
The Ministry of Transportation unveiled the latest re-work of the long-delayed highway at a public meeting Tuesday night.
MTO spokesperson Will MacKenzie tells Bayshore Broadcasting News, the project could go to tender this fall, once it has approval from the Ministry of the Environment.
The MOE is involved in the project because of the large number of deer in the area the highway will cross.
The latest design includes deer fences along the length of the highway between Collingwood and Wasaga Beach — and places for deer to cross the new roadway safely.
The re-design will also include roundabouts for cars at each end of the highway.
The earliest projected completion date for the road is now 2012, if work begins early in the spring.
Work on the highway was abruptly halted just weeks after the election that brought the McGuinty Liberals to power at Queen’s Park in 2003.
