Despite disagreement between Opposition and Conservatives MP’s on one recommendation in an Agriculture sub committee report on last year’s deadly Listeriosis our break, Bruce Grey Owen Sound MP Larry Miller insists it is a good document.
Miller is Chair of the Federal Agriculture Committee and says while the Conservatives don’t agree with the recommendation for a public inquiry into the outbreak, all party members agreed with about 95 per cent of the report.
The minority conservative members of the sub committee issued a dissenting report that made no mention of a public inquiry and Miller says that is a common occurrence with many committees.
Some of the recommendations called for more inspection oversight in meat plants to prevent a repeat of the fatal listeria outbreak that claimed 22 lives.
Miller says one of their recommendations is for more inspectors in the meat packing plants.
He says the Conservative members of the committed want to wait until investigator Shila Weatherill reports back to Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz on July 20th.
Miller says he would not be surprises that some her findings mirror some of the recommendation contained in the Agriculture Committee report.
He says there is bound to be some things in her report not contained in their report and visa versa.
