The United Way of Bruce Grey is celebrating a huge milestone.
Executive Director Francesca Dobbyn says today they handed out their one millionth dollar.
Dobbyn says in 1999 they started by handing out 10-thousand dollars in Community Fund Allocations.
Now 10 years later, they are giving out 182-thousand dollars to different community groups and local charities.
If you add it all up, over the last 10 years the United Way of Bruce Grey has provided a total of $1,181,00 in grants.
Dobbyn says breaching the million dollar mark was never set as a specific goal, but now that they’ve hit it, it is something to be celebrated.
Dobbyn says by luck of the draw, the millionth dollar went to the anger management program at the Men’s Program of Grey and Bruce.
The Women’s House, the Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hanover, the Durham and District Food Bank, and the Bruce Children’s Aid Society are also among the groups that received some of that money.
Dobbyn says despite the downturn in the economy – or maybe because of it – 2009 has been the United Way of Bruce Grey’s most successful year ever from a fundraising standpoint.
She says people in the community understand the issues and challenges facing their neighbours.
