Anyone who has had anything to do with big band music in Bruce and Grey counties over the past quarter-century will likely know the name Ernie Duff.
Well, a special big band concert is being held in his honour tonight at 8 PM at Chesley District High School, with family and colleagues in attendance to help celebrate.
Ernie’s daughter Lisa Griffin told us her dad has been diagnosed with a brain tumour and a rather large one making it inoperable.
Ernie himself has said he wants to go out with one more big gig and if the circumstances are right, he’ll be the featured singer at the Wednesday concert.
Stardust Big Band member Charlie Bell says the concert is free but donations are being accepted for the Chesley Hospital.
Bell says they want to pack the room.
Musician Wayne McGrath says the band has been in existence for almost 25 years and Ernie Duff joined during the second year of the group.
McGrath says he hopes Ernie will belt out a few tunes on Wednesday because he describes him as the true definition of a big band singer.
Many in Southampton and Port Elgin remember Ernie as owner of the Duffy’s Fish and Chips where he was known to break into a song or two for the customers.
Daughter Lisa says she hopes the party is a huge one because she believes that’s what Ernie is all about.
Again the event tonight is free although you are welcome to leave a donation for the Chesley Hospital.
It starts at 8 PM at Chesley District High School.
