The Grey Bruce Health Unit is fighting to keep its funding for a youth program.
In an effort to keep their program alive members of Youth Action Alliance Program made a presentation to council at last nights meeting.
Council voted unanimously to show their support by sending letters to the Minister of Health Promotion and Premier Dalton McGuinty.
Mayor Ruth Lovell-Stanners says council will ask them to re-instate the funding and will point out the value of the the youth program.
The provincial government announced the 300 thousand dollars for the program will be cancelled at the end of August.
Youth Advisor, Jasmine Dalton says their program has made an impact on the entire community.
Dalton says they have been successful in reducing tobacco use in teens, promoting healthy lifestyles and good sexual health choices.
She says they provide peer to peer mentoring and believes it has been very effective.
Dalton says students are more open and willing to ask questions with other students.
Dalton says she is very pleased with council’s reaction.
She says for the community leaders to recognize the importance of the program shows how well it has been working.
Once the funding is gone so will the 20 student jobs and 2 full-time youth advisor positions at the health unit.
