Organizers are tallying up donations from Cops for Cancer events across Grey Bruce.
Fundraiser Co-ordinator Jen Wright says so far, the total stands at 186-thousand dollars.
While that’s well short of the 300-thousand dollar goal set for this year, Wright says the region should still be proud of what’s been accomplished.
She points out there are still a few more events to go and also says people are stopping by her office every day with more donations.
Wright says she’s examined the numbers to find that donors and participants are not down, but the amounts pledged by individuals are.
She attributes the smaller donations to the economic climate.
Wright says about 425 people shaved their heads or donated ponytails at 13 community and 11 school events.
All the money raised goes towards the fight against pediatric cancer.
The running total was announced Monday at a recognition breakfast for the participants, donors, volunteers, and sponsors.
The guest speaker was Dr. Don Mabbott from the brain tumour program at Toronto’s Sick Kids hospital.
Wright says it was great to have someone show people exactly what money raised here accomplishes in the field of research.
She also says in the first 3 months of this year, the Bluewater Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society has already helped 12 local families with transportation costs racked up during treatment programs.
