A rare World War One army uniform that belonged to a man from Walkerton is now in the hands of the Bruce County Historical Society.
Captain Peter Allan was a Quartermaster with the 160th Battalion from Bruce County who later lived and worked in London as a civil servant.
Dave Benson — the Heritage Coordinator in Chatham-Kent — found the uniform at an antique shop in Morpeth, south of Chatham and was initially interested in securing it for the museum he oversees.
Also included are photographs and letters exchanged between Allan and his son who served overseas during World War Two.
Benson says if the uniform hadn’t had Captain Allan’s name inside, they wouldn’t have known who it belonged to.
He says the letters and photos make it a good historical family grouping.
Bruce County Historical Society President Karen Ribey says donations of military uniforms have been made in the past but not to the historical society itself.
The materials will be available to the museum for display.
County Archivist Anne Marie Collins says it’s fantastic to have the complete uniform along with the photos and letters, unlike some acquisitions that are just part of the uniform.
She says having everything tells the story about the person.
