Protests at Site 41 have intensified today.
A group of native demonstrators have blocked the entrance to the landfill in Tiny Township.
And OPP closed Concession Road 2 between Dawson’s Side Road and Baseline Road for most of the afternoon to protect protestors who were walking in the middle of the road.
Police re-opened the road at about 5 PM.
Community Monitoring Committee member Anne Ritchie-Nahuis says she had received permission from OPP to hold a car and truck rally around the site, but the native protest changed things.
She says the native group is upset because Ministry of the Environment officials who were at a meeting last night were not able to confirm they had the necessary approval to go ahead with the site.
Ritchie-Nahuis says the demonstration at the site today is a peaceful one.
Meanwhile — the Council of Canadians has notified Simcoe County of possible legal action if the construction work continues.
The letter sent by the council outlines the group’s concerns with the location of the dump in Tiny Township.
Many say one of the world’s purest water sources could be contaminated by the landfill.
The letter also states the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario has expressed repeated concerns about the site.
Council of Canadians chair Maude Barlow led a march of 600 people to the site in May.
She says the landfill is being built on top of the Alliston aquifer which many communities rely on for drinking water.
