It’s not good news from Durham.
Interforest is discontinuing its production line at the plant leaving 130 workers without jobs as of July 10th.
Company officials are blaming the high cost of doing business in Canada including the rising loonie.
Interforest says however they will leave Sales and Distribution at the plant and have no plans of selling or liquidating.
About 35 workers will be left once the production line moves out.
Interforest management says the move has nothing to do with the quality of the employees work and is strictly a business decision.
West Grey Mayor Kevin Eccles is feeling the pain.
He says its a sad day in the region.
Eccles says there are a few things the municipality can do including trying to help laid off employees retrain or get other jobs.
He says West Grey can also market itself as a community with a ready-made skilled labour force which includes those let go recently by Durham Furniture.
And Eccles says they’ll also be applying for government grants made specifically for one industry communities that have been hit hard by manufacturing layoffs.
Interforest makes veneer products and has two other plants in the U-S.
