A grade 4/5 class at G.C. Huston School in Southampton are angels…Earth Angels that is.
For the second year in a row, they’ve won the Earth Angel Environmental Award and completed the Student Energy Challenge.
Their teacher, Ms. Judy Stoner, says the class ran “Energy Conservation Island,” similar to the TV show Survivor.
She says the students chose to kick their principal off of the island when they discovered she wasn’t using energy very wisely.
Stoner says the students have also trained other students to conserve energy through an “Energy Boot Camp,” and most classes are now able to conduct classes without using electricity on sunny days.
Stoner says they beat 30 schools last year for the award and 100 started this year’s competition, but only 40 remained involved until the end.
The G.C. Huston won the class with 270 points, narrowly beating a Toronto school that scored 260.
Stoner says one of the challenges to conserve energy was sent home for parents to do. Those who were successful in reducing energy use at home got a ticket for a pizza draw at the end of a two-week period.
The class recently was recognized by Saugeen Shores Council for their achievement.
They sang their song “We Must Save Our Energy,” an environmental anthem to the tune of the Battle Hymn of the Republic.
It was written by student Thomas Forsyth, who also serves as the Class Mayor.
