Kincardine Council is hoping for some federal cash to build a new gymnasium at the Davidson Centre.
An application has been made to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RINC) program for a grant to cover one third of the project, which is estimated to cost 2.9 million dollars.
The other two-thirds would come from provincial and municipal funding.
The project would also include new dressing and equipment rooms, and a warm viewing area.
Recreation Director Karen Kieffer says comments in the recently completed Community Needs and Feasibility Study on Recreation show that the biggest priority among people who use recreation facilities is for a new gymnasium.
Council had discussed applying for a grant for the gymnasium when it was deciding which projects to make infrastructure grant applications for.
Kieffer says that was the first time council had heard about the plan and says they’ve now had time to think about it before deciding to go forward with the grant application.
If it is built, the gymnasium addition at the Davidson Centre would reduce some of the parking available.
Kieffer says it could take away one row of parking, but more space is available at the back of the lot.
