Property Taxes are going down a bit for homeowners in Collingwood.
It had been thought property taxes would go up about 10 dollars for every 100-thousand dollars in assessment this year.
But instead, they’re going down a small amount.
Collingwood Mayor Chris Carrier says the drop of about 20 dollars for the year on a home assessed at 200-thousand dollars, is because of the way the county has allocated its tax collection.
Simcoe County’s tax increase for the year was finalized at 4.87 per cent.
Carrier says much of it was shifted off homeowners and onto businesses.
Carrier says he disagrees with how the county taxes are levied, and especially with the current recession.
He would like to see the tax burden shifted away from businesses.
Carrier says he’s sure homeowners would accept paying five dollars more a month in property taxes if it helps keep businesses in towns.
