The OPP are stepping up their presence on area trails.
Officers will be checking to make sure ATV drivers haven’t been drinking.
Police say you can be fined or lose your driver’s license, even spend time in jail, for driving an off road vehicle under the influence.
Under the Off-Road Vehicles Act of Ontario, you also have to wear a helmet unless the vehicle is being driven on property owned by the driver.
OPP say 8 people have died in ATV related crashes so far this year.
That’s compared to one this time last year.
In four of the fatalities, the driver had been drinking and in three others, the operator did not have a helmet on.
Police also say excessive speed is a contributing factor in many ATV accidents.
